Episode 2: A Monkey On A Quest
American Born Chinese’s second episode opens with the revelation that Wei-Chen is looking for the last scroll with the help of his wand, Guanyin, the celestial being of Mercy, and Jin, a young boy on Earth who he believes will serve as his guide to finding the fourth sutra.
Guanyin arrives on Earth to meet Wei-Chen. She counsels him to get along with Jin. After that, she humorously lives an ordinary life on Earth as an aunt who immigrated.
Jin’s mother counsels him to confront the coach and assert himself. Jin appears to want to avoid Wei-Chen at school and even returns the gift he gave him.
The cultural club at the school makes the decision to rebel against Jin’s meme clip. For Jin, this is embarrassing, and all he wants is for everyone to move on from the video. Meanwhile, Jin’s father makes an effort to get along with his boss. Even though they do get along, he finds out that his boss can’t give him a promotion because his boss is retiring.
Wei-Chen informs the crowd back at school that Greg was the one who took the video. Then Greg tells Jin that because he thinks Jin is a great player, he will speak with the coach on Jin’s behalf. Since his video was interpreted as a bullying act, Jin is aware that he is being used. Jin decides to talk to the coach directly, and he is successful in persuading him of his skills. He concludes by pledging that he will assist in setting up the equipment area.
Wei-Chen makes the decision to help Jin set up the equipment room. But because of Wei-excessive Chen’s power, the entire room is a complete mess in a matter of minutes. However, Jin benefits from it because it makes the coach choose him for a position.
The two of them argue once more after Jin’s father informs Jin’s mother of the circumstance. Jin’s mother suggests that when Jin’s boss retires, Jin’s dad take over the job.
Later that day, Jin sees a fight break out between Wei-Chen and one of Sun Wukong’s pig-like men. Immediately after, Wei-Chen tries to convince Jin to act as his guide.
Review of the Episode 2
Despite the fact that each episode starts with a brief explanation, it can be difficult to distinguish the characters and comprehend what happened in each scene. People who are familiar with the mythology will comprehend it more clearly and readily than those who are not.
As the story develops, we find out that Gene Luen Yang decided to create the world within the Heavenly Realm, a world that is based on his comic book.
It’s complicated, but the show’s choice to focus immediately on Jin’s academic difficulties makes up for it. This is an area where the show excels thanks to some deft character-based humor.
