Nottingham Forest vs Chelsea Prediction
Since the game’s restart, both teams have experienced injury setbacks, but Chelsea has the stronger squad and will be the favorite to earn all three points on New Year’s Day.
Forest has already defeated both Liverpool and Tottenham at home this year; the latter victory came in the EFL Cup. However, they may find it difficult to silence Chelsea’s dynamic frontline this time.
Nottingham Forest vs Chelsea Match Preview
After defeating Blackburn Rovers 4-1 in the EFL Cup fourth round six days prior, Nottingham Forest’s four-game winning streak in all competitions came to an end on Tuesday night when they were defeated 3-0 away at Man United.
As Steve Cooper’s team struggled to contain the Red Devils and ultimately suffered their ninth league loss of the year, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Fred all found the back of the net.
Cooper’s team is still in the relegation zone, but they are only one point away from safety and are only four points behind Leicester City in 13th place at the time of writing. Forest is the only team in the top flight that has yet to earn all possible points away from home so far this season.
Forest have struggled somewhat on the road this season, but have performed better in front of their own supporters at the City Ground, earning 11 of their 13 Premier League points there. In fact, the Tricky Trees have gone unbeaten in their last four home league games, splitting hard-fought 1-0 wins over Liverpool and Crystal Palace with score draws against Aston Villa and Brentford.
Only Man United (65%) has a higher win rate than Forest in January in the history of the Premier League. Forest also has an impressive record in the month of January, winning 11 of their 19 Premier League games, which is their best win rate (58%) in a single month in the competition.

Chelsea, meanwhile, snapped a four-game losing streak on Tuesday at Stamford Bridge when they easily defeated Bournemouth 2-0.
Within the first 24 minutes, both Mason Mount and Kai Havertz scored goals, and even though the Blues had numerous opportunities to extend their lead, they eventually won easily and earned their first three points in the Premier League since October 16.
Graham Potter’s team is still in eighth place in the top flight, but thanks to Tottenham Hotspur’s Boxing Day draw with Brentford, the Blues have closed the gap on their London rivals in fourth place to six points with a game remaining.
In the last few weeks before the World Cup, Chelsea struggled on the road, dropping their last three away games and giving up seven goals in the process. Now that three of their upcoming four games in all competitions are away from Stamford Bridge, Potter will be anxious to see signs of improvement on the road.
The West Londoners have also lost their opening league game in each of the previous six calendar years, but their recent history against Nottingham Forest at least augurs well for their chances in the match on Sunday. In their last seven encounters with the Tricky Trees, they have won each one while scoring at least twice.
Chelsea has also lost just one of their previous 11 away league games against newly promoted teams, a 3-0 loss to Sheffield United in July 2020.
Nottingham Forest vs Chelsea Team News
Dean Henderson, a goalkeeper on loan from Manchester United, will be able to start for Nottingham Forest after missing the previous match against his parent club due to injury. Wayne Hennessey will subsequently move to the bench of substitutes.
However, the injury list for the visitors keeps getting longer. Morgan Gibbs-White is now expected to be out “for a little while” with a muscle issue, and Jesse Lingard is questionable after leaving the game against the Red Devils with hamstring pain despite having it heavily strapped during the match at Old Trafford.
Omar Richards and Giulian Biancone, who are each still recovering from ACL and leg injuries, as well as Chiekhou Kouyate and Moussa Niakhate, who both have hamstring issues, are all still out for an extended period of time.
In the event that Cooper chooses to stick with a 4-3-3 formation, Sam Surridge or Emmanuel Dennis could start in place of Lingard, while Serge Aurier, who overcame a minor calf injury to start against Man United, could be replaced at right-back by Neco Williams.

Armando Broja (ACL), N’Golo Kante, Ben Chilwell (both hamstring), Wesley Fofana (knee), and Ruben Loftus-Cheek (calf) will all be out for Chelsea due to injury, with the former expected to miss the remainder of the year.
Reece James, who was healthy enough to start against Bournemouth, was forced off with the same knee injury that kept him out of the World Cup and will now be out for up to a month. Captain Cesar Azpilicueta is anticipated to take Reece James’ place at right-back.
Kepa Arrizabalaga, the team’s goalkeeper, overcame a foot issue in time to start against the Cherries, and the Spaniard is expected to keep the starting spot ahead of Edouard Mendy.
Mateo Kovacic and Hakim Ziyech, who received additional time off after their World Cup performances with Croatia and Morocco, respectively, may be able to rejoin the matchday squad, but a spot in the starting lineup seems unlikely for the midfield pair.
Conor Gallagher could replace Denis Zakaria in center-midfield, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be hoping to force his way into the starting lineup in front of either Havertz, Raheem Sterling, or Christian Pulisic. Potter may also think about making a few other changes to freshen up his team.
